The scale on a map is drawn so that  inches corresponds to an actual distance of  miles. If two cities are  inches apart on the map, how many miles apart are they? (Round to the nearest tenth)

4.5/350 = 11.5/X, solve for X, cross multiply

X = 350(11,5)/4.5 = 890 miles

11.5 is over twice 4.5, but less than 3 times as much

so X = more than twice 350 or 700, but less than 3 x 350 = 1050

890 is close to the middle
