You can turn this question around to say that: why aren't the men who commit these crimes taken more seriously? After all, they get a slap on the wrist at most and are sent on their merry way.
You can discuss a couple of points for this question:
In a heavily patriarchal society, many still see the woman as the submissive. (Modern media still perpetuates this, too). This leads to things like law enforcement victimizing/interrogating women as the problem rather than the men. For example, in a rape case, LEOs may ask a woman, "What were you wearing?" instead of questions about the setting or the attacker. Many psychologists believe that women are still the target of male rage. When presented in court, men are often able to get away with it by spinning words on consent, setting, and other factors.
