Michael will choose between two restaurants to purchase pizzas for his party. The first restaurant charges a delivery fee of $6 for the entire purchase and $11 per pizza. The second restaurant charges a delivery fee of $2 for the entire purchase and $12 per pizza.

 

Let X be the number of pizzas purchased.

(A)For each restaurant, write an expression for the total charge of purchasing

X pizzas (with delivery).

Total Charge From The First Restaurant(In=Dollars)

Total Charge From The Second Restaurant(In=Dollars)

(B)Write an equation to show that the total charge (with delivery) from the two restaurants is the same.

Restaurant 1: 6 + 11x ( $6 fee + $11 per pizza)

Restaurant 2: 2+ 12x ( $2 fee + $12 per pizza)

Set then equal to each other.

Restaurant 1 = Restaurant 2

To set up your 2 equations, make sure you have grouped topics by equation. What I mean by that is, You have an equation for company A and a different equation for company B (in this case).

You will set it up in the Y = MX + B format. M (slope) represents rate of change, the word per is often attached to this rate in story problems. B (y intercept) will often represent the price of admission, or a flat fee regardless of how much you order. Part A:

1. Restaurant A: Y = 11(x) + 6 ($11/pizza, flat delivery fee $6)
2. Restaurant B: Y = 12(x) + 2 ($12/pizza, flat delivery fee $2)

Part B: (I think what they really want to ask is WHEN is the total cost between the two restaurants the same?)

1. Set them equal to each other, solve for X (the number of pizza's you would order)
2. 11X + 6 = 12X + 2
3. 4 = X When you order 4 pizza's it doesn't matter (cost wise) what restaurant you get it from
