Douglas directly challenged slavery peacefully by speaking out against it. He was one of the greatest orators of his time. He went on speaking tours and wrote about his experiences as a slave. A famous speech of his “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” Is a critique of the institution of slavery and the US. Other African Americans like Nat Turner violently revolted against the institution directly.
