An acid is a solution with an excess of H+ ions. Sometimes, you may hear that the H+ ions attach or attract to the water molecules and form H3O+, hydronium ions (a 3-hydrogen molecule with a positive charge). Usually, this is omitted though as H+ gets the point across.
