The perimeter of the triangle is a + b + c. In other words, all sides added together will give you the perimeter of the triangle. Here we know that 17 inches = a + b + c, and 17 in = 5 + 4 + c.
If c is the third side, then we can use the information above to calculate it.
So c = 17 - (5+4), 17 - 9, 8. Therefore, this triangle has sides of 5, 4 & 8 inches.
