Glucose and certain metabolic intermediates in Kreb's cycle or Glycolysis can be used to synthesize the non-essential amino acids in cells (essential amino acids by definition cannot be synthesized and must be taken in dietarily). Glucose or these sugar intermediates serve as the carbon backbone to which amino groups are added during the process of amide transfer or transamination.
