There is an important conception to understand about a measurement of area, called a square unit. See, not a rectangle unit, not a circle unit, but a square unit. Essentially, to measure an area you need to cover the whole area by these square units and count them all. This is why the previous answer provided by Hannah has these two statement: "is found by MULTIPLYING" and "The units are always SQUARED with area". Now, if you try to use a rectangle unit instead of a a square unit you will find out that you cannot use MULTIPLICATION anymore because the length of sides of a rectangle are different.
