Why are small pet turtles not really a very good house pet?

The reason small turtles are not such good pets is that they don't stay small! Red slider turtle are the most popular pet shop turtle that are purchased by many families. Red sliders are sold when they are relatively small but can grow up to a foot long!

Many times, for whatever reasons, the families release these turtles into lake and ponds in their neighborhood where they can continue to grow. New York State is having a real problem with red sliders as they eat up all the available food in ponds and endanger the native turtles that habitat there. Turtle continue to mate and produce young in city parks and can become a real nuisance for park workers who have to clean up after them and pull them out of parking lots so they don't get run over. So, next time you want a new pet, maybe a fish? CW

Great question!

A turtle is surely a lot of work.. and sometimes they can just give you a little reward. Turtles are what I like to call, an "ornamental pet". Usually, a turtle does not want to be handled by humans and when they are handled the turtle doesn't like it and they may bite you, so watch out! Maybe when you would think of a new pet maybe go for either a cat, bird, dog, and many wonderful animals!
