Why should one read aloud when proofreading?

I find it beneficial to read things aloud when proofreading something. This helps me hear what I have written to better catch errors. I find that if I simply proofread something silently, I read it how it is supposed to sound, not how it actually sounds.

These are all fantastic responses to the question. In my view, the reason why one should read aloud rather than not is mainly a developmental one. Communication via human voice is, in itself, more natural than the written word. Writing and communication via the symbol/sign is a relatively new affair in the total history of human communication. As a result, we are much more attuned to picking up on the nuances and "message errors" of the human voice, while with writing we have to work harder to develop the smooth and effective communication of ideas, as well as the ability to notice our mistakes in grammar and syntax. Reading one's draft out loud can make up for this rather annoying inadequacy, since it allows us to more clearly detect whether or not we are expressing our thoughts the way we intended to. If one thinks about it, we develop the ability to speak at a very young age and with minimal instruction, while we must receive a formal education for more than a decade to master the arts of grammar and rhetoric. Writing isn't natural. Speaking is. Therefore, read aloud often when proofreading, so your ears can catch the mistakes that your eyes and your inner voice may have overlooked.
