There were many tensions that led to the American Revolution between the British and the American colonists, but you could narrow it down to the following:
- taxes - Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Intolerable Acts, etc. (which the British implemented to help gain tighter control over the colonies, but also to help them pay back debt from the French and Indian War)
- The first one goes hand in hand with "no taxation without representation". The colonists were upset that they had to follow rules passed by the British, when the colonists were not represented when these decisions were made.
- presence of the British soldiers - think Boston Massacre, blockade of Boston Harbor, etc.
