the ground and lamp post form 2 sides of a right triangle. 5m is the height. the base is 2.3 + how far he is from the lamp post

5/(2.3+ x) = 1.8/2.3 = 2 sides of a smaller right triangle with the same ratio of 2 sides

cross multiply

2.3(5) = (2.3+x)(1.8)

11.5 = 4.14 + 1.8x

1.8x = 11.5-4.14 = 7.36

x = 7.36/1.8 = 3.68/.9 = 36.8/9 =4.09 meters from the lamp post
