If you look at a map of the U.S. and which states voted for which candidates during the Election of 1860, you will see that the Southern states all voted for the Southern Democrat, John C. Breckenridge. The South's justification for their reaction to secede from the Union was that they felt the Election of 1860 did not at all represent their political views and now would not be represented in the national gov. with Lincoln as president.
