When you have things in your expression that have the same base to a power, you can combine like terms. For example, if you have x²x⁵. Both have the same base which is x. If they are multiplying, you can add the exponents and keep the base to combine like terms ( x²x⁵=x⁷). If they are dividing like they are in this problem, you have to subtract the exponents (x^-2/x-⁵= x^-2-(-5)= x³).
