This is not true. Replication of DNA is one of the first steps before cell division can occur.
Think about it like this: If the DNA is what gives you your "code" for all of your genes & traits, then a cell would not be able to survive without that DNA.
So in more sciency terms: The steps of the cell cycle are as follows; G1 (Growth) -> S (DNA replication) -> G2 (More growth) -> Prophase (Formation of chromosomes) Metaphase (Lining chromosomes in the middle of the cell) -> Anaphase (Separating chromosomes or chromatids) -> Telophase/cytokinesis (Division of plasma membrane forming two cells).
