We know that the perimeter of a rectangle has the formula P = l+l+w+w or P= 2l+2w where l is the length and w is the width.
From the problem, we see that l is 4 inches longer than w. So l = w+4. Now we can substitute into the above equation.
P= 2(w+4)+2w
Distribute out and simplify and you will get the perimeter in terms of w.
