Many years helping students get top scores in ACT Math section
Basically the question is asking you to determine how many QUARTER-CUPS are in 8 cups. We can translate this into a sentence:
8 divided by 1/4 is ?
we can use that sentence to write the equation
8 [division symbol or divided by] 1/4
then change 8 into a fraction
8/1 [division symbol] 1/4
remember to divide fractions we keep, switch, flip and multiply (or in older textbook terms, invert the second fraction and multiply) so now the equation is 8/1 [times symbol] 4/1
to multiply fractions, remember you just multiply numerators and denominations straight across, so
8 times 4 is 32 (that is your numerator in your answer)
1 times 1 is 1 (that is your denominator in your answer)
your answer is 32/1 or which simplifies to 32
so 32 batches of cookies can be made.
(CHECK: four one-quarter cups make 1 cup and that would make 4 batches; 4 times 8 cups (all of the cocoa) makes 32, so the answer makes sense)
