Hi Ashlee,

RNA polymerase is responsible for the synthesis of RNA. This occurs during transcription. RNA polymerase binds to a promoter and unwinds the strands of DNA. RNA polymerase then initiates RNA synthesis at the starting point on the template strand. RNA polymerase moves downstream (5' to 3') until it reaches the termination sequence which causes it to be released from the DNA template strand.
