That statement is TRUE;

The way I like to remember it is that Europeans were looking to promote three things GOD, GOLD, & GLORY.

God= some were hoping to spread christianity to the New Lands (often forcing Indigenous peoples to convert),

Gold= The many riches in the New World (the Spanish in particular were looking for Gold but many Europeans were hoping to use all of the new natural resources in the new world for trade in order to make moneyyyyy)

Glory= Fame! This was a time of European dominance and many explorers wanted to make a name for themselves through their conquests and adventures.
