1) Max Weber argued that the major shift of Modernity was an overall social process that transitioned traditional and emotional thinking and social organization to more practical and logical forms of thinking and social organization. This concept is known as?
Rationalization of society–The historical change from tradition to rationality as the main type of human thought. The willingness to adopt the latest technology is a strong indicator of how rationalized a society is. Why are some societies more eager than others to adopt new technology? (Peniston 2011 class lecture). Also, referred to by Weber as “The Iron Cage” (Weber 1919/1946). Weber also says that the key to all these developments were base on the Protestant Reformation, which underlined the concept that prosperity were signs of God’s favor. Also, the emphasis shifted from families (communities) to the individual due to the Protestant focus on the individual soul (Peniston 2011 class lecture). Weber saw all this tied to his concept of “Ideal Type (Weber 1904/1949).
2) Weber’s sociological methodology is grounded in this concept that allows a researcher to categorize a variable or entity by generalizing its components and its definition based on a composite understanding of that entity through empirical observation. This methodological concept is known as?
Methodology of Ideal type. It is value-free research. Weber said sociologists should strive to be dispassionate and detached (Peniston 2011 class lecture). Weber’s methodology was as ethical as it was epistemological (retrieved on April 20, 2020, from https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/weber/#IdeTyp). For Weber the Ideal Type underscore ethics, but oddly enough it does not translate or relate to reality, even though many have strived to achieve the balance between ethics and the daily struggles in one’s life ( (Peniston 2011 class lecture)
