GERUNDIO

El gerundio es un tiempo progresivo.

El gerundio puede terminar con

-ando, -iendo o -yendo

Es propio usar esta terminación en los verbos que terminan en AR, ER, IR

Para los verbos que terminan con -ar, se usa la terminación

-ando

-AR

pasear - paseando

abrazar - abrazando

dar - dando

esperar - esperando

amar - amando

acabar - acabando

esperar - esperando

estar - estando

hablar - hablando

trabajar - trabajando

Para los verbos que terminar con

-er e -ir, se usa la terminación

-iendo

-ER

comer - comiendo

temer - temiendo

beber - bebiendo

haber - habiendo

hacer - haciendo

perder - perdiendo

querer - queriendo

ser - siendo

volver - volviendo

ver - viendo

*poder - pudiendo

IR

decir - diciendo

Si el verbo tiene dos vocales juntas, se escribe la terminación

To start, a gerund is used when you need to convey that an action is in progress. In other words, it's the way that you can convey "ING".

Usually, gerunds are used with the verb "estar", meaning "to be ______ING". For example:

"Estoy bebiendo el agua." (I am drinking water).

Your first step is to figure out WHO/WHAT is doing the action. Is it yo, tú, él, etc.? Then decide which form of estar you need to be using.

Once you have determined which form of the verb to use, you need the gerund. There are two ways to form a gerund in Spanish:

AR Verbs: remove the "AR" from the verb, and add "ANDO"

ER and IR verbs: remove the "ER/IR" and add "IENDO"

For example:

Yo estoy comiendo. (I am eating).

Ella está caminando. (She is walking).

Hi,

If the infinitve verb ends in AR, like COMPRAR (to buy) the gerund ends with ANDO (COMPRANDO / BUYING). If the infinitive verb ends in ER, like COMER (to eat) or IR, like VIVIR (to live) the gerund ends with IENDO (COMIENDO - EATING / VIVIENDO - LIVING).

There are also irregular verbs like to go - IR in Spanish

I'm going home - Estoy yendo a casa

I am eating tacos / Estoy comiendo tacos ING (English) = ANDO or IENDO (Spanish)

Remember, every time you want to use a gerund in Spanish you have to use the verb ESTAR (to be) in Spanish.
