You can try a bunch of different numbers but there are lots of possibilities. and none work EXACTLY.
But to do this algebraically, you would say the two numbers are "x" and "y". Then x + y = 7 and x•y = -22,8
Since x + y = 7, then x = 7 - y. Plugging that into the second equation we get:
(7 - y)y = -22.8
7y - y2 = -22.8
y2 - 7y - 22.8 = 0
using the quadratic formula y = (-(-7) ± √((-7)2 - 4(1)(-22.8))/(2•1) = (7 ± √140.2)/2 ≈ 9.42 and -2.42
Notice this is an approximation because multiplying these actually results in -22.7964. (The actual numbers involve square roots and are irrational numbers)
