The Italian Renaissance saw the power of wealthy noble families in Italy consolidate and strenghten itself. Families involved in trade and banking, such as the Medici family saw continued increases in wealth and power in politics, gaining access to public office and eventually even having a Medici become Pope. These wealthy political families also became major patrons of the arts, often paying for the incomes of major Italian artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, etc.
