The first European country to make contact with the Aztecs was Spain. A Spanish fleet led by Hernan Cortez arrived in Mexico in the early 1500s. Due to the introduction of European diseases, the Spanish were easily able to conquer the Aztecs, and turned their capitol of Tenochtitlan into what we now know as Mexico City.
