Abolitionists tried to confront slavery for centuries, to varying degrees of success. They formed societies to advocate against slavery and help runaway slaves. Many northern states banned slavery altogether. However, the slave states still had a lot of power at the federal level, and wanted to push slavery into the west. These confrontations came to a head in the Civil War (1861-1865), when the southern states tried to secede in order to preserve slavery. They failed, and slavery was abolished in the United States by the 13th Amendment.
