As an ESOL student, how can I improve my speaking and writing skills?

Hi there!

The best way to improve your speaking skills is by practising with a native English speaker. Other ways to practise include watching movies and listening to the radio to English. This will help improve your understanding of what people are saying when you have conversations in English.

You can improve your writing skills by reading in English, and by writing about things that interest you in English. You could try keeping a journal/diary in English. You could also write blog posts, short stories or poems. If you have any friends who are native speakers of English, you could write write letters/emails to each other.

I spent many years learning French, so I know that learning a second language can be difficult at times, as well as enjoyable and rewarding. Having a tutor to help you can be really useful, and is a good way to get feedback. I have experience working with ESOL and EFL students, and would be very happy to help you with your speaking and writing skills!

There's a book, "If you can talk, you can Write" by Joel Saltzman.

If you can talk to a friend, write down what you say. That's the best exercise for leaning how to write.

Do not worry about grammar or spelling. I can help you with that. Just try to write the way you really speak. It will be natural and you will not run out of ideas.
