Speciation is basically the process of one species splitting into two or more different species. For example, if there was one species of birds, and something caused this species to physically separate (geographic isolation), or undergo other processes (such as different feeding or foraging patterns, etc.) then over time, speciation may occur, causing this one species to diverge into two or more distinct species.
