The Mary Poppins of Teachers: learning is fun, engaging, and active!
Hey, this is literally a made for television movie. It is a pretty cool story that goes way back into the vault of American History. So let's go: Once Upon a Time a long time ago the President, Thomas Jefferson needed two explorers to go check out the land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. So he hire Meriwether Lewis and William Clark for an expedition that involved exploring all the land to the West of the Mississippi. I mean these men traveled about 8,000 miles over 2 years. And these guys went through it. Really went through it: harsh weather, extreme conditions, the unknown, and the Native Americans. So let me introduce you now to Chief Cut Nose. I mean his name alone is fascinating right. Well Lewis and Clark were given "Peace Medals," before they left, They were pretty cool with the president stamped on the front and a peace symbol on the back. So imagine the white man exploring and then basically handing the Indian Chief the shiny medal. Uhhhhhh I am kind of not cool with this but hey it was a small consolation prize for what we were about to do to them. (You really don't want to get me started on this part of American History). So they give the medal to Cut Nose. So history moves forward right. The medal probably buried with Cut Nose but you know we came in built Railroads. White men cared very little about Indian graves and they probably just dug right through them to place the railroad tracks. So this rare medal ends up with who. NOOOO not a Native American tribe or back on a reservation. Nope a New York Financier, Edward Dean Adams and J.P. Morgan associate. A very very very rich white man. So was this property stolen or was it yet another finders keepers tale. It was stolen. Allen Pinkham forward to the year 2002. He wanted his family legacy back and I don't say I blame him. This medal shows up in 2002 at the American Museum of Natural History and Pinkham spoke up and said NOPE. Allen Pinkham, is a Cut Nose relative, distantly and believed that his uncle chief Cut Nose received the medal. He wants the medal returned to Idaho. Why? Because we need to correct two centuries of unfair treatment of the Native Americans. Lewis and Clark stated in their words "extreemly hungry and much fatiegued adventures," (their spellings not mine) came into his great great great uncle's village and changed their history forever.
