The length L, of a screw is supposed to be 3and 3/8 in. Due to variation in the production equipment ,there is a 1/4in. Margin error. Solve the inequality.

-1/4 <= L-3and3/8 <= 1/4 //add 3 and 3/8 to all sides of the inequality and you get

 

25/8 <= L <= 29/8 

 

3 and 1/8 <= L <= 3 and 5/8

 

It's acceptable/expected.... that any of the screws will be of length between 3 and 1/8 inches and 3 and 5/8 inches.
