This question can be easily answered with proportions.
Since the recipe calls for 1/4 cup of sugar for every 3 cups of milk. The recipe specifies a ratio of 1/4:3. For 8 cups of milk we equate the ratio of sugar to milk to some amount of sugar over the 8 cups of milk.
1/4 / 3 = ? / 8
After cross multiplying, we find the following:
8 * 1/4 = 3 * ?
Since 8 * 1/4 reduces to 2, we find:
2 = 3 * ?
After dividing both sides by 3, we find that 8 cups of sugar would require 2/3 cups of sugar.
