if you paid 70.00 for an item after 5% sales tax, and the company marks up each item by 20%. what was the wholesale cost of the item.

I was asked this question yesterday and am lost each time.   Please help.

Thank you so much.  So am I correct to assume that anytime I am giving a percent I multiply the cost times 1. Whatever the percent.
like 25% of 50.00 would be 50*1.5.

Not necessary. It depends on what is being calculated. The "1" is used when looking for a previous value as in the case of the markup. The markup was 20% of the wholesale price. Therefore the sale price was wholesale cost (the 1) plus the markup (0.2).
