Actually, most plants are hardwired to require some darkness for different hormonal and metabolic processes. There are commercial growing operations that shine lights on their plants for up to 18 hours, but they still immerse the plants in darkness for at least 4 hours daily.
If you do shine lights on plants for an extended period of time, they may at first seem to grow quickly, but eventually they will fizzle out and perform poorly. They may even die! Plants are much more responsive than we think!
