A couple of things you might want to consider is
1) Th effect of British actions taken against the colonists--Intolerable Acts, Lexington and Concord, etc.
2) The effect of propaganda--Thomas Paine's Common Sense
3) The Declaration of Independence
When wars go on for a long time, people tend to get tired of them. Casualties, being away from home (family, farms or business), the lack of seeing a quick conclusion to the war. Think about how tired Americans are now about the war in Afghanistan, and what's going on in Iraq.
