A production line that produces fiber boards for home construction operates at eighty feet per minute. Each board produced is eight feet long. There are fifteen boards in a unit. Four units make a bundle.

If the operator wants to produce at least 300 bundles per day, assuming continuous operation, how fast should the line operate (in feet per minute)?

He wants to make 300 bundles in a day.  A bundle is 4 units, so that means he wants to make 4 * 300 units, or 1200 units.

 

There are 15 boards in a unit, so he wants to make 15 * 1200 boards, or 18000 boards.

 

One board is 8 feet, so he wants to produce 8 * 18000 feet, or 144000 feet.

 

But that's in one day, and the question asks how many feet per minute.  How many minutes are there in a day?  60 minutes per hour and 24 hours per day means that there are 24*60 minutes per day = 1440 minutes per day.

 

So he wants to run the line at a rate of 144000 feet per 1440 minutes.  So divide 144000 by 1440 and you get 100 feet per minute.
