A key point to the conflict revolved around Texas. The independent Republic of Texas decided to join the United States as a political move. Texas had been courted to join the U.S. by both Presidents Tyler and Polk. However, the policy of "Manifest Destiny" also played a large role in trying to secure Mexican territory for annexation. The move by Texas to join the union was perceived as an act of war. Many feel the U.S. provoked Mexico into war to achieve an end.
