An excellent question. Your answer might depend on who you ask. Someone born and living in Taiwan might reply- "Taiwan is an independent nation".
Someone living in Beijing would reply that taiwan is a part of China, and was taken from China after the revolution of 1949 when the Nationalists fled to the island. after the Communists won the civil war.
The correct answer depends on how the person feels about the Communist revolution. At one time Taiwan had a seat in the United Nations. It was taken from them and assigned to mainland China.
