Let's translate each sentence into "Math".
Pineapple = p
Orange = x
is means equal
Pineapple is 7 times as heavy as an orange: p = 7x
Pineapple weighs 870 grams more than orange. p = 870 + x
Substitute p = 7x into the second equation:
7x = 870 + x
Subtract x from both sides
6x = 870
divide by 6
x = 145
The orange weighs 145 grams.
The pineapple weights 7 times the orange = 7(145) = 1015 grams.

With this equation, they go 6 by subtracting x from each side to cancel it out. 7x - (1) x = 6. X-x = 0

okay. so i found out a way to do it on your own w/o this way. if the orange plus the pineapple has the same sum as the product of the pineapple times 7, then YEAH. You just find which ever number you haven't already used, in this case 145, and that's your answer.

Remember when converting to a larger weight we divide. So if you total the weight of the pineapple and the orange, it would weigh a total of 1106 grams. Now divide the 1106 grams by 1000 and it will give you the 1.106 kg. When you divide your moving the decimal point to the left. When you multiple you move the decimal point to the right (convert to a smaller weight)

Answer is actually 1160grams since the pineapple is 870g MORE than the orange. So 870+145= 1015 (pineapple weight) +145 (orange weight) = 1160grams total ÷ 1000 = 1.160kg
