The diagram shows that you rode 4 rectangles and your friend rode 5 rectangles.
So the ratio of km you rode to km your friend rode = 4 to 5 (also can be written as 4/5 or 4:5). The ratio (fraction) cannot be reduced any further.
Question 2
Since the question states that the rectangles represent equal parts, divide the total 72 km into 9 equal parts, which is 72/9 = 8.
So each part, or rectangle, represents 8 km.
You rode 4 rectangles x 8 km = 32. Your friend rode 5 rectangles x 8 km = 40.
