Simple answer
Rational numbers are numbers that are any of the following:
- A fraction or can be converted into a fraction (Example: 1/2, 5 or 5/1, -3 or -3/1...)
- Repeating decimals (Example: 0.3333333... = 1/3)
- Terminating decimals (Example: 0.5 = 1/2)
Irrational numbers are any numbers that are not rational numbers. Meaning...
- Can't be converted to a fraction
- Don't repeat with any pattern
- Don't terminate or end
Example: √2 = 1.414213562...
π = 3.141592654...
Hope that helps...
