Start by drawing a picture. When they say "turn left", I think we can assume that you make a 90-degree turn (right angle)
So, you might have a line 3" long going towards the top of the page and then another line going 4" to the left. The equivalent distance is a line directly from start to finish. This line forms the diagonal of a right triangle. You can get its length using the Pythagorean Theorem
