Conjugating verbs can seem overwhelming. The key is to know your verb endings and rules for each tense, as well as the irregulars. The basis for conjugating regular verbs is to remove the final two letters of the verb in its original form, and replace them with the correct ending for whatever subject is attached to that verb.

For present tense verbs, you will use the following endings:

AR: ER: IR:

o amos o emos o imos

as áis es éis es ís

a an e en e en

For the preterit (past) tense, your regular endings are:

AR: ER & IR:

é amos í imos

aste asteis iste isteis

ó aron ió ieron

Preterit also has a large number of irregulars, however many of them can be placed into categories. If you learn the rules and patterns for the different categories of irregulars, it can make learning them more manageable. Some though, like "ser" and "ir," are simply unique and you need to memorize them.

Then for the imperfect verb tense, use these endings:

AR: ER & IR:

aba ábamos ía íamos

abas abais ías íais

aba aban ía ían
