Do you mean .80% or .80 or 80 %?  I'm assuming you mean it the way you wrote it.

 

I don't know how much algebra you have learned.  If you have learned about solving equations, then you could write:

 

40 = .80% x = .008 x.

 

Then divide both sides by 008:

5000 = x

 

So the answer is 5000 students
