Look like an ecology-based sediment deposition, eutrophication, fill, succession of species etc. scenario is being sought.

But I came across a more interesting scenario: look up the Lake Peigneur mine disaster. If that had occurred with a landlocked lake, it may have just drained dry into the hollow mine!
