The society in Mecca was polytheistic and also materialistic. Much emphasis was put on gaining wealth, especially via the caravan trade, not on helping the needy. Based on the apparent revelations he received from the angel Gabriel, Muhammad wanted people to stop worshiping idols and begin worshiping just one God, Allah. He also wanted people to care for the poor and hungry. His message was not initially popular among the wealthy merchants of Mecca.
