The framers of the US Constitution created three branches of government-- Legislative,Executive and Judicial-- to make sure that one person, or one group of people, did not have too much power, which, is abused, could lead to tyranny.
They had recently won independence from England, whose monarch was viewed to hold excessive power and use that power to oppress the people. This is why the framers made sure that there would be no king in America.
The separation of powers ensures that there is a balance among the three branches of government, For example, the executive branch (president) has the power to send soldiers into battle, but the legislative branch has the power to declare war. This way, neither branch has more power than the other.
