Specialization (of labor) is a skill in one kind of work. Some historians also refer to this as "division of labor." Specialization of labor was an important step forward in the rise of civilizations because it shows that people no longer had to focus just on hunting or farming to survive. While agriculture was still the backbone of society, people now had the luxury of pursuing and specializing in other tasks, such as carpentry, masonry, baking, and weaving.
