When you are multiplying a fraction by a mixed number, first turn the mixed number in a(n improper) fraction.
- So 4 1/3 becomes → 13/3
- we now have to multiply 13/3 and 12
- In multiplying a fraction by a whole number, multiply the whole number by the numerator of your fraction and keep the same denominator
- so we have (13 * 12) / 3 = 156/3
- With such a result you try to simplify first, then turn into a mixed number for your final answer
- But this is a special case because 156 ÷ 3 is 52! So your answer is 52
(remember that a fraction is also some special written form of division)
