Let the unknown number be K, We know that the other value is 17 greater than k so it can be represented as: (k + 17); next we know that the sum of the two numbers is 31 so K + (K +17) = 31; this simplifies to 2K = 31-17
: so 2K = 14 meaning that K must be 7; Now if we plug 7 in for K into our original equation for the second number we get 7 + 17 = 24; the values are solutions are 24 and 7
