You mostly need to understand scientific method. As Lyndsay says, it promotes critical thinking, and that extends to social and cultural literacy. Just storing up facts isn’t good enough. To be an educated thinker, you need to be able to tell speculation from hypothesis, to know that there’s no such thing as “just a theory,” but that a true theory is something with a very strong basis in observation already. You need to know the difference between anecdotal evidence and scientific observation. Know the basics of scientific method, and you can evaluate almost any assertion, in or out of science.
