You have 264ft of fencing to enclose a rectangular plot that boarders on a river. If you do not fence the side along the river find the length and width of the plot that will maximize the area

what is the function A(x) that calculates the area of of the rectangular plot with width x feet

If you don't understand derivative, you can do the following: -b/2a=h in the vertex (h,k) of the parabola. Using Paul M.'s equation... -264/(2)(-2)=-264/(-4)=66 for w Also, I know that you must show work but the maximum area is always a square. 264/4=66 you have a square with each side 66 feet but one side is not needed so add that extra 66 to the opposite side of the river to get 66+66=132 feet; you have a rectangle 66 by 132 by 66 by "the river"
